Purpose

This position will need a thorough utility oriented engineering experience.  Has primary responsibility for the engineering and design of projects totaling more than $1M.  Plans and conducts work requiring judgement in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.

Accountabilities

  • Provides engineering evaluations, recommendations, and planning associated with the installation of new distribution facilities (required to accommodate major new business loads or general growth patterns), the upgrading of existing facilities, and the correction of undesirable system operating characteristics for special projects of a non-routine nature.  Included is the assurance that all additions are technically feasible, compatible with long-range corporate guidelines and plans, and the most economical of technically feasible alternatives.  For new business studies, recommendations of a minimum system capable of meeting the customer requirements and a desired system providing the best overall solution for the company are made
  • Reviews substation transformer and circuit loadings; conducts system configuration recommendations; manages generation facility interconnection process (Rule 21, etc.); provides budget recommendations/justifications for new feeders, reconductoring, etc
  • Assist troublemen with customer complaint investigations; assists in creating special switching procedures (eg, substation transformer paralleling) Assist "controlling party" during major outages
  • Full engineering design, planning, and technical assistance for Substation (Protection and Control), Distribution, and Transmission design packages. Writes technical specifications for substation equipment ensuring accuracy and proper deployment in the field
  • Manage Distribution System Maintenance - performs underground and overhead refurbishment analysis and makes recommendations (switch replacements or new switch installation, conductor and equipment upgrades, etc.); assists in creating and managing capital and O&M budgets
  • Conducts voltage studies and problem amelioration; completes voltage drop calculations; conducts line voltage regulator studies:  conducts placement, sizing and settings of substation voltage regulator performance review and setting changes for capacitor bank installations and controller settings
  • Provides contact and facilities planning (particularly for ski areas). Conducts protection analysis; performs or manages protective device coordination studies; analyze protective device performance during faults; performs fault calculations upon customer requests (switchgear ratings or arc flash calculations); performs motor starting (flicker) calculations. Performs solar and backup generator systems review and approval
  • Position will be assigned direct reports and be expected to plan resources for annual budgeted substation construction work

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 10+ years experience as a utility engineer
  • PE license highly preferred or the willingness and ability to obtain
  • Knowledge of protection, substation, and distribution and transmission design
  • Proficiency in substation design preferred
  • Utility experience required
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills #LI-RJ

Salary: $107,322 - $160,982 DOE
