Lead Electrical Standards Engineer

Purpose

The Senior/Lead Standards Engineer will plan, research, design, update, maintain, and communicate engineering design and construction standards for substation and distribution type equipment. The engineer will ensure compliance of approved material, standards, and procedures through interaction with other departments. This person will research, analyze, and support uniform and standard methodologies in providing solutions to related line construction and materials issues.

Accountabilities

  • Ensure distribution and substation construction standards are reliable, cost effective and aligned with applicable US standards and codes. This would include but is not limited to performing a cost/benefit analysis of new materials and new construction standards.
  • Evaluate and supervise manufacturers’ designs to ensure compliance with established specifications and guidelines. Investigation and resolution of field reported problems related to designs and materials; resolving material failure trends with suppliers and making the appropriate changes in the standards or material specifications.
  • Through maintaining knowledge of current industry standards, technologies and other utilities construction practices, develop and perform field studies of material and recommend modification or replacement of material items used.  Develop, update and maintain Electrical Material Specifications
  • Develop, update and maintain the Company’s Electric Construction Standards, Engineering Design Guidelines and Electric Service Bulletins with the input and assistance of Design Engineering and Operations Departments Assist in providing technical and application training for Engineering and Operations personnel.
  • Actively seek out ways to improve job efficiency and standardization.
  • Participate in collaboration by attending team meetings and supplying ideas.
  • Provide off-hours support, including rotating "on-call" responsibilities, in response to service outages, system contingencies, and storms.
  • Works with the Supply Chain group to review material contracts, provide input on alternative suppliers, and advises on material stocking and procurement

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology degree from an ABET accredited engineering school with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in Electric Utility Industry
  • P.E. license a plus
  • Possess excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Motivated, self-starter with ability to work in a flexible and fast paced environment
  • Strong familiarity with work management systems software and Excel.
  • Knowledge of power system operations and protection systems
  • Knowledge of electric utility equipment and its functions and applications.
  • Knowledge of electric utility infrastructure maps, records, and documents.
  • Familiarity with good utility practice and business management including regulatory requirements desired.
