Vice President, Tax

Purpose

As a vital component of the Chief Financial Officer’s leadership team, the Vice President of Tax plays a pivotal role at Algonquin-Liberty. This position demands a strategic leader capable of overseeing all tax-related matters, ensuring compliance, and driving operational excellence across borders. With responsibilities including the oversight of the quarterly and annual ASC 740 income tax provision, managing cash taxes, and tax expense efficiently, the role requires a proactive approach to tax management and a keen ability to navigate the complexities of cross-border taxation effectively.

Accountabilities

  • Tax Compliance & Reporting: Lead the oversight of the quarterly and annual ASC 740 income tax provision and ensure tax compliance for the organization, with a focus on operations in Canada and the U.S.
  • Financial Results: Vigilantly monitor and ensure the company meets its annual financial targets related to tax matters, including proactive steps to minimize cash taxes.
  • Controversy Management: Skillfully manage and resolve global direct and indirect tax audit issues with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
  • Operational Excellence: Drive significant improvements in tax operational processes, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness across the board.
  • Risk Management: Stay ahead of legislative changes affecting tax matters, assessing their impact, and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Team Leadership: Foster a culture of high engagement and teamwork, where employees are disciplined in processes and collaboratively work towards achieving personal, departmental, and business goals.

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent is required, with a preference for a Master's degree in Tax
  • CPA/CA certification
  • Demonstrated expertise in Canadian and international tax, with a strong ability to manage tax matters in a cross-border context between Canada and the U.S.
  • Proven leadership skills, with the ability to oversee a multifaceted team and drive tax operational transformation changes
  • A strategic mindset, capable of ensuring compliance with all existing and developing tax laws and regulations, and effectively managing tax audits
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the field, showcasing a track record of success in tax management and compliance, preferably with experience in managing tax matters for multinational organizations
