Vice President, Portfolio Value & Commercial Analysis

Reporting to the EVP Strategy and Sustainability this role is an integral member of the Strategy & Sustainability team and broader enterprise leadership. This role will facilitate the development and maintenance of strategic value creation framework(s) for Algonquin and its portfolio elements (enterprise to individual components/assets/investments as appropriate). This role will ensure collaboration between strategy, finance, business development, operations and other areas of the business to develop the value creation frameworks and rationale, understand value levers linked to strategy, long-term model and organizational investments, tradeoffs and choices.  The VP will be responsible for developing and maintaining the strategic investment decision framework, valuing the overarching LT strategy, its evolution and strategy execution performance over time against plan and market(s)/peers.  This VP will bring a quantitative value perspective to the strategy. 
This role will maintain an enterprise perspective of investment requirements for the strategy and contribute to exploring potential alternative models for investment requirements eg “asset lite”.  

This role will work very closely and collaboratively with other members of the Strategy team as well as key members from Finance, Business Development and Operations, in particular, to develop these models and assess viability and business implications. 
This role will also work with external providers and analysts as appropriate and be the strategy representative on value considerations and forums. 
The VP Portfolio Value and Commercial analysis in conjunction with Finance will maintain a perspective on how our agreed peer group is creating value and models that others are using to drive value and performance.  This role will work with the rest of the strategy and sustainability team to value the contribution of our key initiatives such as net-zero and ESG and understand the money flows and investment trends in our industry and relevant technologies.  
The successful candidate will be a seasoned investment and financial leader with strong strategy experience. The person will be a collaborative, highly strategic thinker capable of sourcing and synthesizing myriad information sources both qualitative and quantitative.

This person will be a strong leader capable of shaping work in an ambiguous future and effectively communicating messages, developing productive internal and external networks/relationships and managing change. This person will be outcome-focused and capable of working strategy to execution with a quantitative and value focus. 


⦁    Facilitate development and maintenance of value creation framework(s) (TSR/SOTP/PE multiple etc) that values the business and its components/assets and develops/understands value levers for the business 
⦁    Develop lessons learned/insights from historical analysis and projections for the future based on strategies and initiatives
⦁    Value the strategy and strategy execution performance over time
⦁    Work with the business and senior leaders to identify opportunities and learnings from the framework(s) to maximize value creation over time
⦁    Develop strong internal relationships and collaboration with key finance, business development and operations leaders to ensure alignment and engagement on value perspectives
⦁    Work with the business and IR to ensure appropriate messaging regarding strategic value creation is embedded in our investor communications and key reporting (annual report, sustainability reports, quarterly reporting etc)
⦁    Work with strategy and business teams to understand and develop investment requirements for the strategy
⦁    Develop and maintain an investment decision framework for the strategy and ongoing strategic business choices 
⦁    Value the strategic decisions and alternatives required to support the strategy 
⦁    Work with the strategy and sustainability team and business representatives to value key initiatives
⦁    Work with the strategy and sustainability team and business representatives to monitor and track industry investments and implications for shareholder value and positioning
⦁    Educate and share perspectives on value with the business to ensure common understanding and integration into planning processes and business activities short/medium/long term 
⦁    Identify, develop and maintain relationships with key partners, information and research forums for the benefit of AQN 
⦁     In collaboration with Finance build a COE (center of expertise) for AQN with regards to long-term value creation and value levers for the business and industry 
⦁    Train and mentor Strategy & Sustainability junior team members to ensure career development and succession planning. 
⦁    Integrate with other key members of the Strategy & Sustainability team for alignment and integration of market, technology, sustainability, policy and financial value perspectives 
⦁    Demonstrate the cultural attributes and be a role model within Algonquin and the Strategy & Sustainability, team
⦁    Contribute as a key leader to the overarching strategy development and evolution 
⦁    Provide support to key strategic initiatives in the business as required 

Education and Experience

⦁    Bachelor’s degree, post-graduate a plus, CFA or accounting qualification  
⦁    Extensive experience and expertise in strategy, value creation frameworks and methodologies 
⦁    Minimum 15 years of experience in investment banking, venture capital, and fund management. 
⦁    Strong networks in the investment and financial sector 
⦁    Knowledge of electricity, gas and water industries 
⦁    Market sensing and monitoring capabilities
⦁    Proven track record translating strategy to execution programs, leading specific initiatives as appropriate and supporting business implementation & growth initiatives
⦁    Proven team management and staff development skills
⦁    Commercial acumen, strong quantitative analysis and modeling skills
⦁    Demonstrated excellent leadership and communications skills (Board and executive-level)
⦁    Demonstrated track record of successful work in a multi-jurisdictional, matrixed organization 
⦁    The ability to build strong relationships and influence and create buy-in and alignment with peers, the business and other stakeholders internally and externally
⦁    A mindset for action and delivery, and the ability to deal with ambiguity, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, take direction from key stakeholders, and handle pressure with a positive attitude
