Senior Project Manager

Purpose

 

This position is responsible for providing project oversight during the development, planning, construction and turnover to Operations of one or more of Algonquin’s currently-contracted, renewable energy Major Projects.

Accountabilities

 

  • Use project management industry best practices in the application of Algonquin’s Project Management Methodology to provide oversight of all project activities during development, engineering, construction and turnover activities for one or more major capital renewable projects including the following tasks:
  • Lead the project team through the development and progressive elaboration of all project management artifacts including--but not limited to--project scope, schedule, budget, risk register, communications plan, etc.;
  • Monitor the progress of the project team and report on the status of the development of all major owner (product) artifacts and deliverables including--but not limited to--project permits, constructability studies, owner’s engineering, the financing plan, the safety plan, execution of land agreements, the operations plan, the owners construction staffing plan, and the insurance plan; 
  • Manage relationships with external project partners (energy off-taker, interconnection utility, equity partners, lenders, etc.) including delivery of all formal reporting requirements set out in agreements with these parties; 
  • Monitor progress and coordinate internal Algonquin team functions, subject matter experts and third party service providers assigned to the project including engineering and technical services, legal, finance, procurement, operations, regulatory and permitting, safety, asset management, risk management and business development; 
  • Assess the quality of engineering and financial for the purpose of risk identification and analysis as well as recommending additional resource allocation to address deficiencies, mitigate risk, and develop risk contingency plans;
  • With the participation of internal subject matter experts, legal staff and senior Business Development staff--scope, tender, negotiate (including the development of contract terms and conditions), retain and manage professional service providers required during development and construction of the project for permitting, environmental and regulatory services, civil engineering, electrical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying, and etc. all in accordance with corporate procurement policy and authority limits;
  • With the involvement of executive Business Development staff and internal subject matter experts participate in the coordination, preparation, and negotiation of major equipment supply and construction contracts;
  • Coordinate and manage established major equipment supply contracts and relationships;
  • Monitor and report on project costs for the purpose of compliance with project budgets and projecting cash flows including variance reporting;
  • Work with internal financial analysts to report on project returns and other financial metrics;
  • Report on all major project activities to the broader department in accordance with established reporting policies (generally on a monthly cadence);
  • Write reports and correspondence related to project as required/requested for the purpose of updating internal and external project clients;
  • Provide Safety Leadership for the project , including the development and execution of the project specific Safety Plans in accordance with APUC  project safety practices and guidelines and applicable law;
  • Provide daily guidance and support to the project Site Manager in the execution of owner’s site responsibilities including management of owner’s site staff, safety and environmental compliance, progress monitoring, coordination of contractors and major equipment supply, and compliance with quality plans;
  • Supervise and manage project support activities provided by the assigned Project Coordinator including cost tracking, processing purchase requisitions into purchase orders, payment of invoices, and etc.; and

Education and Experience

 

  • Extensive renewable energy project development and construction experience;
  • Extensive project management education, skills, and experience;
  • Solid experience with construction and major equipment supply contract development and contract management including participation in the development of contracting terms and methodologies, issue resolution,  change management, etc.;
  • Solid experience related to compliance with energy off-take and interconnection agreements;
  • Solid subject matter understanding of  civil, electrical and mechanical engineering in relation to renewable energy power generation; 
  • Solid understanding and demonstrable experience in construction related aspects of renewable energy power projects including geotechnical, civil, electrical and mechanical construction means and methods; 
  • Solid understanding and demonstrable experience in project cost management and control, financial reporting and related components of project finance (pro-forma modelling, equity and debt contributions, cost projection, exchange rates, letters of credit, interest during construction, bonding and security, retainage and hold-back, liens, etc.);
  • A solid working knowledge of relevant insurance issues related to property and liability insurance, bonding and risk management;
  • A working knowledge of permit compliance, regulatory restrictions and application to renewable energy projects;
  • A solid understanding and demonstrable experience related to worker and public safety management; 
  • An advanced university degree in engineering or business and a minimum of 10 years project management working experience with a strong background in engineering and construction activities with a material portion of that experience directly involved with major renewable energy project construction;
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office suite of products including Microsoft Project;
  • Must have the ability to learn and utilize new software as required;
  • Must have the ability to succeed in corporate safety training including practical and table top training;
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and the ability to rent vehicles on the corporate account; 
  • Must be able and flexible to travel within and outside of Canada; 
  • An advanced level of verbal and written communication skills in the English language;
  • French/English bilingual is an asset but not a requirement.
