Senior Manager, Engineering

Purpose

This role leads the Electrical Engineering functional group within the Operations Engineering Department COE in the Renewable Energy Generation business group.  The Senior Manager is responsible for resource and support to capital planning, and provides leadership to the staff delivering all technical aspects Engineering & Technical Services.  This includes engineering (and systems) design, technical support services, project management, performance optimization of our systems and generation facilities to achieve reliable and safe operation of >2.5GW of generation capacity at our renewable energy generation sites (wind, solar, hydro and thermal).  Additionally the Sr. Manager provides support to CAPEX and OPEX planning (budgeting and long-term-plans) for all operating assets as related to engineering activities, and maintains oversight, or direct control of CAPEX and OPEX projects executed by the engineering team, utilizing internal processes and practices (based on PMI principles).
Technical domains include High Voltage / Substation equipment (BOP), power conversion & collector systems, generators & controls, Energy Storage, SCADA & Remote Operations and Control infrastructure), Condition monitoring systems, battery and UPS systems, and all other electrical equipment associated with the operation of generation facilities up to 600MW.
The incumbent is accountable for ensuring the engineering solutions designed and planned by their team are appropriate and reflect Liberty strategy and standards as well as regulatory standards (NERC & FERC) and industry best practices.
People Development responsibilities include leading culture, role modeling change leadership, succession planning, and incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion.

Accountabilities

 

  • Manages and supports direct reports responsible for the planning, management, execution and implementation of technical / engineering activity and projects, inclusive of the day-to-day management, scope management, and issue and risk management.
  • Responsible for financial planning associated with the department (OPEX), and supports CAPEX planning or generation facilities, with strong emphasis on asset Operational Performance optimization.
  • Responsible for overseeing engineering solution design, analysis and resource estimation, ensuring that team members understand and consistently apply Liberty processes and standards to deliver quality engineering solutions.
  • Involved in the development of engineering and asset management policies, standards and procedures.
  • Develops the short/mid-term engineering department strategy, using inputs from Operations and Resource Planning to drive improvements in safety, reliability, customer satisfaction, and operational excellence.
  • Support and ensure the team carries out proper forecasting and coordinatization of staff, vendors, materials, and permits in the execution of technical / engineering and/or project activities.
  • Responsible for resource planning, recruiting, resource management (internal, contract and student/co-op), and mentoring to maintain a best-in-class engineering department - Centre of Excellence.
  • Leads the embedding of enterprise processes within their department - engaging staff within and across departments to continuously improve upon process implementation and design.
  • Act as a change leader; role model new change; demonstrate new ways of working.
  • Accountable to ensure all operating assets are NERC, ISO, RTO, PPA/Off-take agreements are audit compliant while maintaining close relationship with these external entities.
  • Participate, conduct, and/or coordinate analysis related to equipment wear and failures to perform root cause analysis, and define strategies and plans for corrective actions.
  • Determining appropriate methods for soliciting team input and providing project updates and proceeding accordingly for the purpose of ensuring optimal value.
  • Performing and/or supporting due diligence reviews, including contract and financial model reviews for new assets in development.
  • Incorporate and emphasize diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of role.
  • Work with the other areas of Liberty Power to drive consistency and sharing of best practice in the engineering.
  • Lead team to achieve departmental goals by providing technical guidance and direction, as well as hands-on resource and project management.
  • Leads teams responsible for system performance analysis, and works with staff across internal teams, to understand, prioritize, and plan for system improvements, system maintenance programs, and other major system upgrade or repower initiatives.
  • Ability to identify and analyze compliance-driven engineering requirements and provide guidance where necessary to achieve objectives and/or overcome obstacles.
  • Provide technical expertise to various parts of the organization as requested including testimony to regulatory bodies and due diligence activities.
  • Ensure quality assurance and control processes are embedded in ways of working and are implemented consistently to monitor and manage business and operations risk.
  • Project planning, design and execution.  Manage CAPEX projects supporting system improvements, retrofits, repair & overhaul, through both organic and systems expansion.
  • Research all aspects of power generation technology as required, assimilating the information into expertise, educating others in the organization at appropriate level, debating technical issues both inside and outside management services.

Education and Experience

  • Education requirement can be met through either formal education or equivalent experience. 
  • 10+ years of experience in renewable energy generation or a related industry .
  • Professional Engineering License strongly preferred.
  • PMP certification an asset.
  • 5+ years of people and team leadership experience driving team performance, engagement, and accountability.
  • Responsible for a combination of engineering professionals.
  • Accountable to ensure all operating assets.
