Senior Manager, Energy Market and Analytics

The mandate of the Energy Services (ES) team is to maximize the company's risk adjusted asset return by providing superior portfolio management (hedging/optimization) and market advisory services. The Energy Services team consists of three groups (i) Portfolio Management (Trading Team) responsible for developing and executing trade strategy. (ii) Client & Asset Support responsible for managing customer off-take arrangements and asset on-boarding. (iii) Market Analytics responsible for all reporting and development of analytical tools and approaches to support the portfolio management team. 

The Senior Manager of Market Analytics is a key strategic position reporting directly to the Senior Director of Energy Services. This role is a leadership position with two direct reports and is responsible for development of proprietary tools, processes and systems that enable decision-quality analysis and reporting within Energy Services and Algonquin.  

The successful candidate is an expert in North American power market analysis with deep knowledge of analytical approaches and understanding of fundamental data requirements. 

The main responsibility for the initial year of this position will be to manage the design, population and implementation of the Energy Services team's database (Snowflake) and the creation of standardized executive reporting.  Post 1-year the focus switches to Strategic Analysis & Risk Management.

This position can be remote in other locations where we currently operate.



  • Lead the design & population of the database with external information setting up data flows to capture such items as weather, wind resource/speed, market demand etc.
  • Project manage the design & implementation of database schemas according to industry best practices (flat model vs dimensional).
  • Lead implementation of database ensuring users can access critical information in a timely and efficient manner.    
  • Support database monitoring and data validation post database implementation. 
  • Document all data process flows from input to output including data validation. 
  • Create and publish executive reports based on design specifications provided by the Portfolio & Corporate executive team.     
  • Oversee the distribution and data validation of reports (daily, weekly  and monthly) with the goal of standardization, automation and accuracy.
  • Identify risks and communicate to the appropriate stakeholder groups (Portfolio trading team, executive management, operations etc.)
  • Report information includes and is not limited to: position, exposure, P&L, price volatility, KPIs.                     
  • Lead efforts in building strategic models to monitor and evaluate risk metrics on portfolio of assets.                     
  • Collaborate with trading team in the development of hedge/trading strategy.                     
  • Monitor and gather key industry intelligence, identify trends and communicate to relevant stakeholders.                     
  • Champion new software or analytical approaches to improve earnings or mitigate risk.                     
  • Collaboratively identify and solve business issues or continuous improvement initiatives across the LPCo platform.
  • Leverage technical aptitude to identify tools to improve workflow and communication with entire team.
  • Assist the trading team and business development in the evaluation of new asset opportunities and/or market opportunities. 
  • Build & Lead a team of skilled Market Analyts/Data Engineers that support the Energy Services team and the broader Renewable group.
  • Deploy resources strategically to meet Algonquin's business needs and goals.                      
  • Proactively motivate, develop and retain talent, maintaining a deep talent bench and developing team capabilities needed to succeed

Education and Experience


  • Working level knowledge in programming languages including R, Python & SQL software packages is a must. 
  • Experience in database design and implementation is strongly preferred. 
  • Fundamental market knowledge concerning the basics of power markets and power marketing is a must. Successful candidate must have knowledge concerning supply/demand fundamentals as well as core derivatives (fixed for floating hedges). 
  • Experience analyzing market fundamental drivers in ERCOT, PJM, MISO, CAISO, AESO is preferred. 
  • Candidate must have advanced spreadsheet skills and strong modelling aptitude.
