Senior Manager, Business Development (Renewable Natural Gas)

Purpose

 

Working within Liberty’s Business Development team, the Senior Manager will be a key figure responsible for leading the growth of Liberty’s unregulated Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) business.  Reporting to the Director of Business Development, the Senior Manager will be responsible for overseeing the origination, due diligence and execution of new investments in RNG assets, and will take a leading role in the formation of Liberty’s investment strategy in the sector.  As a newly created position within the organization, the role offers the highly motivated successful candidate the opportunity to materially influence Liberty’s future growth plans.

Accountabilities

 

  • Build and leverage commercial relationships to grow Liberty’s non-regulated Renewable Natural Gas business, originating and executing profitable investments in anerobic digestion, landfill gas, hydrogen and other low-carbon fuel technologies
  • Work with the Director to ensure that a pipeline of greenfield and acquisition investment opportunities is being developed and systematically evaluated to meet the company’s growth objectives in RNG over a 5 year time horizon
  • Oversee existing platform investments and developer arrangements to ensure projected levels of organic growth are being achieved through these channels
  • Take a leading role in commercial negotiations, crafting deal structures with all commercial stakeholders (feedstock suppliers, host farmers/landfills, RNG / environmental attribute offtakers)
  • Oversee all aspects of acquisition execution, including coordinating with internal and external subject matter experts to ensure all due diligence streams are completed and documented within tight transaction timelines
  • Take a leading role in developing the investment thesis underlying investment opportunities in execution, and lead the creation of executive level materials for internal approval process
  • Work closely with the economic analysis group, supervising the financial modelling workstream, and taking overall ownership for valuation methodology
  • Act as an internal subject matter expert on renewable natural gas markets, including applicable regulations and pathways under the California LCFS program, the Renewable Fuel Standard, and other emerging RNG markets
  • Work closely with Origination and Energy Services teams to optimize the value of environmental attributes being generated from the portfolio, and build relationships within the C&I offtake market
  • Use their knowledge of RNG and other renewable fuel markets to provide strategic recommendations on future growth markets and related technologies

Education and Experience

 

  • Minimum 10 years of business experience
  • Minimum 5 years of renewable energy and/or natural gas sector
  • Minimum 3 years of transaction origination and deal management experience
  • Experience building and maintaining an external network of commercial contacts and leading negotiations with external counterparties
  • Experience evaluating complex projects and financial transactions using discounted cash flow models 
  • Experience structuring and negotiating non-standard commercial contracts
  • Excellent external and internal relationship building skills with an focus on driving business results
  • Commercial acumen and the ability to effectively evaluate and solve business challenges
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize conflicting deliverables
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
