Senior Director, Energy Projects

The role of Senior Director – Energy Projects, will be to provide leadership to business development teams and staff on non-financial aspects of renewable power generation project development during Project Stage 2 and  Stage 3, and to provide due diligence leadership to origination and acquisition initiatives pursued by the broader Business Development team.



Responsible through direct reports for managing project development staff, including, but not limited to:

• Professional and technical training,
• Annual strategy, goals and objectives and performance management, and
• coaching and mentoring of team staff in all aspects of their work.

Implementing and managing standardized project management tools including:

• Risk Management,
• Stakeholder Management,
• Capital Budgets and cost planning,
• Project Schedules and work breakdown structuring,

Managing project-specific development budgets for projects in Project Stages 2 and 3:

• Manage project development budgeting;
• Presenting major projects for Board approval;
• Negotiation of material agreements including construction and major equipment supply;
• Establish and maintain project priorities.

Assess development and technical aspects of origination and acquisition initiatives including:

• Procurement of 3rd party professional services;
• Establishing capital costs;
• Assessment development risks and establishing appropriate mitigation strategies;
Assist with the preparation of annual budget for the Development team; (staffing levels, salaries, benefits, training, travel, bonuses, and all 3rd party expenses, etc.)

Education and Experience


  • Clear track record of project development success, including overcoming challenges in financial viability, permitting, project execution schedules and stakeholder engagement,
  • Comprehensive knowledge of power generation technology – all types. (wind, solar, hydro-electric and other renewables)
  • Functional knowledge of heavy civil construction techniques and practices: foundations, drainage & stormwater management, road building, structural erection, etc.
  • Functional knowledge of electrical power generation and control technologies prevalent in the renewables industry; power conversion technology, protection and metering, controls and SCADA, wireless and fiber-based telemetry, transmission & distribution, etc.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of project development cycle (real estate and land control matters, environmental impact permitting, initial and detailed engineering, construction, resource assessment, generation and financial modeling, financing, operation)
  • Complete functionality with modern software platforms (data-bases, MS Office/Teams/Outlook/Sharepoint, CAD, engineering forecasting tools, web management & research, MS Project, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills required (written, oral, report-writing, presentation creation and execution, etc.)
  • Documentation Management – meticulous documentation management skills and passion and attention to detail required
  • Engineering degree or other relevant post-secondary education
  • 10 years working experience in the power generation industry
  • 7+ years of people leadership experience
  • Previous experience with large scale renewable energy projects
