Senior Analyst, Financial Planning and Analysis - Corporate Planning (Analyst III)

Purpose

 

This is a newly created role on the Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis team that will provide analytical support at the consolidated enterprise level to Algonquin Power and Utilities/Liberty as it continues to grow its portfolio of utilities and renewables businesses. The position reports into the Manager, Financial Planning and Analysis (“FP&A”)

 

The Analyst III is responsible for supporting the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of the long-term corporate model. This role is a high-impact and visible role that provides an exciting and unique opportunity to deliver value-added analysis to the Senior Management on strategic corporate finance decisions.  

 

The team is in the process of implementing a cloud-based planning tool called SAP Analytics Cloud (“SAC”), and the Analyst III will have a hands-on role in its successful roll-out, and will be helping to create workflows, processes, and documentation as it relates to the long-term corporate model.

Accountabilities

 

  • Support the day-to-day development, maintenance and management of the Algonquin’s consolidated long-term financial model(s) for decision-making purposes.
  • Work closely with the SAC project team and other stakeholders to support the implementation and continuous improvement of the SAC planning tool that will support future financial planning and analysis processes.
  • Contribute to value-added analysis, including the development of scenario analysis to address requests from Senior Management.
  • Ensure the delivery of accurate and timely financial information to Senior Management, to support critical business decisions. 
  • Assist in the preparation of long-term financial projection presentations to the Board of Directors, Senior Management and various stakeholders as required. 
  • Actively participate in the current short-and long-term forecasting and planning process and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Lead the continuous improvement workstream by developing and maintaining process workflows and other documentation around the FP&A corporate processes
  • Work closely with Treasury, Tax, Accounting and Business Development to ensure planning assumptions are aligned with the key stakeholders, ensure collaboration and mutual accountability is in place.
  • Develop an understanding of the company’s structure and working knowledge in various areas of business including but not limited to HLBV income, project financing, utility and renewable energy modeling.
  • Assist in the development of corporate financial models and analyses to provide an accurate financial picture of the company, and provide valuation support as needed (SOTP, DCF, etc.). 
  • Manage both internal and external audit requests and inquiries on a timely manner.
     

Education and Experience

 

  • 4 years + progressive experience in similar analytical roles.  Candidates are expected to have a robust understanding of accounting and corporate finance concepts that can be gained via a combination of education and work experience:
    • CPA,CA or CFA or MBA or any other relevant financial designation;
    • Prior experience in analytical roles such as in corporate development, business development, FP&A, transaction services/ corporate finance/infrastructure advisory practice of Big Four firms, equity research, investment banking or audit. 
  • Robust financial modelling skills including developing driver-based three-statement models, including FFO, debt and equity requirements, NPV and ROE/ROI analysis.
  • Advanced understanding of financial concepts, statements (ratio analysis, performance return measures) and valuation methodologies (DCF and DDM). 
  • Experience and working knowledge of US GAAP is beneficial.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to synthesize and present complex information effectively and clearly.
  • Effective combination of business acumen, sound decision-making, and a bias for action; ability to act in a decisive, urgent, and committed way to achieve results; remain focused on deliverables and leverage resources to reach goals.
  • Comfortable working in a growth environment, working with a new team and providing recommendations on improving existing processes.
  • Preference for a candidate who also possesses experience in infrastructure-like sector(s) such as power generation or utilities industries, but not required.
