Senior Analyst, Financial Planning and Analysis (Analyst III)

The Financial Analyst III (Senior Financial Analyst) contributes significantly to the development, coordination and consolidation of all reporting deliverables, financial models, monthly variance analysis and forecasts.  The tasks include data gathering, consolidation, business analysis and will partner with various business groups to achieve results.  This position will also be working with internal and external auditors.

The FP&A Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for performing processes within the FP&A and Finance team to: 


  • Assist with all forecast, budget and long-term forecast requirements for review by the FP&A Manager/Senior Manager 
  • Implement the team process and assist with preparation of MD&A notes including supporting documentation
  • Work with the FP&A Manager and Senior Manager to develop and maintain short and long-term financial projections of the organization
  • Ensure all internal controls processes are followed and evidenced
  • Identify and implement process improvement changes




Quarterly Reporting:



  • Assist the FP&A team in completing the quarterly and annual MD&A disclosures in a timely and accurate manner
  • Understand the business activities and link back to financial variances
  • Coordinate the efforts with various parties within the organization ensuring the completeness and accuracy of information being disclosed
  • Manage the preparation of informative board materials while ensuring accuracy and consistency with the MD&A   
  • Work with Internal and External auditors providing support for management reporting, external reporting and controls 


Financial Planning and Analysis:



  • Assist in developing and maintaining short-term and long-term financial models
  • Work with regional FP&A teams to better understand financial results as well as risks and opportunities to our current forecast. Effectively communicate these findings to the rest of the team 
  • Provide assistance in developing monthly business performance presentation materials
  • Provide variance analysis and explanations on business activities and issues
  • Assist in developing business performance presentation materials for senior management teams to facilitate proactive decision-making on performance KPIs 
  • Develop strong understanding of company’s utilities and renewable business
  • Provide support in maintaining and coordinating internal control efforts within FP&A teams
  • Develop and review various deliverables including business performance presentations for management teams 
  • Create and build process documentation and look for ways to improve the existing processes


Other Responsibilities:



  • Assist in maintaining and developing company-wide KPIs
  • Develop strong understanding of the company’s structure and working knowledge in various areas of business including but not limited to HLBV income, project financing, utility and renewable energy modeling
  • Take initiative to develop an in-depth understanding of FP&A and reporting systems in order to find ways to improve processes and address any control gaps. 
  • Support business development and investor relations teams
  • Provide input and guidance on strategic financial issues
  • Develop various management presentations as required

Education and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree or greater (e.g. Business, Accounting, Economics, Commerce, etc.)
  • An accounting designation such as CPA (CA, CMA, CGA) is required
  • 3 years + of experience in accounting and/or finance roles
  • Strong knowledge of principles of accounting, finance and management accounting required
  • Ability to create reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals and effectively present information and respond to questions from internal and external groups
  • Strong skills in the areas of analytics/modeling and spreadsheet/database creation and maintenance through formal training and/or experience
  • Prior experience with SAP SAC is an asset
  • Experience working in the utilities, energy and/or other regulated industries is an asset
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail required with a desire to learn
  • Must have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs including; Excel (advanced level required), PowerPoint and Word
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as a team member with peers and management to help drive continuous improvement
