Power Market Analyst (Data Engineer)

Purpose

The mandate of the Energy Services (ES) team is to maximize the company's risk-adjusted returns by providing superior portfolio management (i.e., hedging/optimization) and market advisory services. The Energy Services team consists of three groups (i) Portfolio Management (Trading Team) responsible for developing and executing trade strategy. (ii) Client & Asset Support responsible for managing customer off-take arrangements and asset on-boarding. (iii) Market Analytics responsible for all reporting and development of analytical tools and approaches to support the portfolio management team.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Market Analytics, the Data Engineer will provide operational support in three main categories: creating and maintaining data pipelines (i.e., data extraction from customized APIs to curation of production-level data models); managing new and existing advanced analytics models; and finally, creating and maintaining automated operational and ad hoc reports.

In creating and managing data pipelines, the Data Engineer will apply current DevOps best practices in all aspects of their work from extraction from a variety of source systems to the management of our enterprise data warehouse. In this role they will work with relational and unstructured data formats to create and maintain analytics-ready datasets for analytic solutions and reporting. The Data Engineer will also support the operationalization and management of advanced models to support operations following current ModelOps best practices. Lastly, the Data Engineer will support the creation, maintenance, and execution of operational and ad hoc reports. *This role can be hybrid from our Oakville office or Remote out of Calgary, Alberta.

Accountabilities

  • Create and maintain efficient data pipelines for market, transactional, and generation data. Responsible for extracting raw data from a variety of source systems and creating models to transform it into a format usable by downstream applications that serve both analytical and operational use cases.
  • Organize, implement, and enforce correct data collection policies and methods. Ensure the proper functioning of data collection software and applications at all times. Make sure that data collection procedures are in line with all relevant rules and guidelines.
  • Operationalize and maintain data models. Ensure that the models are efficiently integrated in the team's data process, that the results are error-free, and that the models are routinely monitored.
  • Responsible for API development, data ETL, data security, discovery and controls. Demonstrate Best Practices in data science / software development such as: the use of repositories, schemas, and data flow diagrams.
  • Collaborate across teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions in full-stack development tools and technologies using ModelOps best practices.
  • Perform unit tests and conducting reviews with other team members to make sure your code is rigorously designed, elegantly coded, and effectively tuned for performance.
  • Support development of energy marketing analytical tools.
  • Support the development and automazation of standardized reports using Power BI (e.g., position, MtM, etc,)
  • Ensure output of data is accurate and in a useful format for end-use customers (e.g., Traders, Executives, etc.)
  • Responsible for ensuring the timely delivery and accuracy of existing operational reports in Power BI.

Education and Experience

  • Require advanced degree in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Require advanced Programming knowledge. Preference to candidates fluent in Snowflake, SQL, Python, C#, R, and other common API scripting and analytics languages.
  • Require advanced knowledge of Excel and Power BI with VBA and DAX scripting.
  • 1-3 years in a data analyst role, with experience interfacing with ISO systems preferred (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO, CAISO, AESO, ISONE, IESO).
  • Ability to quickly understand and conceptualize business requirements and deliver insightful, fact-based solutions to meet those requirements and operationalize tools provided by power market analysts.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering custom-tailored tools that interface with various types of external and internal systems (e.g., API, portals, sftp, etc.).
  • Strong data structure, data modelling, and analysis skills. 
  • Knowledge of power market fundamentals (e.g., supply and demand, forward/settled prices) and financial hedging instruments (e.g., swaps, options, congestion products) is preferred.
  • High degree of motivation and flexibility with an ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines
