Operations Engineering Co-op

Title: Operations Engineering Co-op

Work Term: Summer 2021

Length of Term: 4 months

The successful student will join the Operations Engineering team within the Operations group of the Renewable Generation Business Unit.  Over the term, this individual will contribute to the goal of the Operations Engineering team to provide the Operations group with technical projects and solutions, recommendations based on data, and industry relevant technical expertise. 




  • Mechanical Engineering; work alongside the department mechanical engineers on projects related to:
    • Development of maintenance plans for rotating equipment, hydraulic power systems, and composite materials (such as wind turbine blades)
    • Basic analysis of components and systems to identify risk or assess mechanical failure
    • Assist or lead small maintenance or improvement projects in any of the four generation fuel types (Wind, Solar, Hydro & Thermal) including budget & scope development, project execution and reporting/documentation
  • Electrical Engineering; work alongside the department electrical engineers on projects related to:
    • Development of maintenance plans for electrical substations and other power systems equipment
    • Assist with compliance submissions to the North American Electricity Reliability Corp. (NERC) and other regulatory requirement such as Arc Flash studies, Protection coordination studies etc.
    • Analyze operating data on an as needed basis (at the request of customer or based on production variances) for system troubleshooting (Wind, Solar, Hydro & Thermal), determining trends and identifying concerns including conducting or coordinating consequential root cause reviews


Education and Experience


  • 3rd or 4th year student, currently enrolled in an Mechanical Engineering program with a College or University where co-op is a requirement
  • Strong interest in practical application of rotating equipment, materials, and power generation
  • Strong MS Office experience, Visio and MS Project is an asset
  • Strong written and verbal Communication skills, with the ability to present analysis findings to internal teams
  • Bilingual French/English is an asset
