Director, Accounting Advisory

Purpose

 

The Director, Accounting Advisory is responsible for ensuring that the Company’s consolidated reports are prepared in accordance with US GAAP and regulatory (OSC, SEC) requirements. This involves providing accounting advisory support to the business and corporate areas on emerging and existing complex accounting issues. This role also involves leveraging accounting skills and business knowledge to help with structuring and contract negotiations. This position also drives sustainable change to the Finance function leading to improvements in areas such as quality, timeliness and cost. 

Accountabilities

 

  • Overall responsibility for ensuring compliance to financial reporting requirements, providing accounting research and analysis for significant contracts, complex transactions and new accounting and reporting standards. Assess impacts on financial reporting processes and internal controls as well as changes to business metrics resulting from new accounting standards.
  • Participate in meetings with cross-functional teams providing complex accounting insight/advice to help the teams achieve their objective (business/asset acquisition due diligence, transaction structure, hedging initiatives and various other projects).
  • Identify process improvement opportunities, project manage and coordinate with all relevant teams (standardization, integration, etc.)
  • Review complex accounting areas (pension accounting, purchase price allocation, stock-based compensation, etc.) and complex accounting memorandum and documentation
  • Contribute to the assessment and preparation of financial statements and note disclosure, the Management Discussion & Analysis and reports to the Board of Directors
  • Manage and monitor external and internal audits for efficiency and effectiveness.  
  • Manage and monitor a strong control environment including but not limited to adherence to internal SOX standards, GAAP, and aligned with Company Policies and procedures.  Manage remediation of any control deficiencies.
  • Coach and Develop direct reports with regular performance reviews related to SMART goal setting and achievement
  • Foster an environment of excellence and teamwork where employees are disciplined in processes and work collaboratively towards the achievement of personal, departmental and business goals and initiatives.

Education and Experience

 

  • Candidate must possess expert US GAAP technical accounting background (CPA designation), coupled with a minimum 10 years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Ability to translate and communicate complex accounting topics to stakeholders, recognizing and anticipating potential opportunities and recommending changes as the business or regulatory environment changes. Can see the “big picture” in a complex environment.
  • Strong business mindset and experience working on operational/business matters. Industry knowledge (regulated, renewables and/or business acquisition: due diligence & structuring)
  • Quick to understand and apply new concepts with strong problem-solving skills
  • People manager and team building experience in leading a team of direct reports in delivering technical accounting and advisory solutions
  • Experience with Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) Consolidation of Canadian and US entities and FX translation
  • Experience with SAP
