Purpose

 

The mandate of the Energy Services team is to maximize the company's risk adjusted earnings by providing superior portfolio management (e.g., hedging/optimization) and market advisory services. The Energy Services team consists of three groups (i) Portfolio Management (i.e., Trading Team) responsible for developing and executing trade strategies. (ii) Client & Asset Support responsible for managing customer off-take arrangements and asset on-boarding. (iii) Market Analytics responsible for all reporting, the development of analytical tools, and approaches to support the portfolio management team. 

The Power Market Analyst, West role is within the Market Analytics group - working closely with the West trading team (i.e., ERCOT, WECC, AESO) in the development of proprietary tools, processes, and systems that enable decision analysis and reporting within Energy Services and Algonquin.

The successful candidate has some knowledge of North American power markets (e.g., ERCOT, CAISO, AESO) and experience working with financial swaps, derivatives (e.g., CRR, PtP), and virtuals (e.g., DARTs). The candidate has advanced analytic techniques, and deep knowledge of analytical approaches including a good understanding of best practices in working with large data sources. 

The main responsibility of this role is to build analytical tools, assist in scheduling trades, and provide analysis to the trade team to support hedging and risk management activities.
 

Accountabilities

 

  • Implement, as directed by the trade group and with the support of ES team, models to monitor, predict, or evaluate risk metrics on portfolio of assets.    
  • Monitor and gather key industry intelligence, identify trends, and communicate to relevant stakeholders.                     
  • Perform standard reoccurring tasks for the trading team such as: supplying forward pricing to plant managers, asset strategy, customers, or business development.
  • Assist in scheduling and encoding trades (e.g., financial swaps, derivatives, congestion management)                    
  • Perform future-focused fundamental-based price simulations for a large group of price nodes to support trading operations using commercial software (e.g., DAYZER)
  • Assist in publishing and maintaining existing executive reports. 
  • Provide validation and commentaries from existing reports (e.g., daily, weekly, and monthly). 
  • Produce high-quality analyses by independently gathering relevant data, and synthetizing conclusions, as directed by internal stakeholders    
  • Run and improve tools and queries to obtain wholesale power market data, as needed.
  • Execute and support database monitoring and data validation tasks.
  • Create automation tools to help accelerate routine analysis-based decision making.
  • Assist in data validation and the creation of automated data validation checks.                    
     

Education and Experience

 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 3+ years of previous relevant experience
  • Knowledge of programming languages including R, Python & SQL (Snowflake) is strongly preferred. 
  • Experience or knowledge of fundamental market simulation tools preferred (e.g., DAYZER)
  • Successful candidate must have basic knowledge of energy markets, products and trading instruments such as swaps, options, futures. 
  • Work experience in the deregulated energy markets or trading floor experience in the energy field is preferred.  
  • Experience analyzing market fundamental drivers in ERCOT, CAISO, AESO is preferred. 
  • Candidate must have advanced spreadsheet skills and strong modelling aptitude.
