Purpose
The Manager, Indirect Tax (East Region) will be responsible for performing various tasks in the management and oversight of indirect tax compliance as it relates to New York American Water, including property taxes, sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, special fuels tax, heavy vehicle, and any other indirect tax obligations. They will support business transactions and assist the Director in providing timely advisory services to the East Region. In addition, will also assist the Director in audit defense activities and support the team keeping the business up to date with the latest developments in indirect tax law. They will be responsible for assisting in the timely provision of information to support decisions by key stakeholders such as Financial Reporting and Regulatory and other Governmental Bodies. Lastly, they will support any other ad hoc indirect tax issues that may arise.

Accountabilities
- Manage all property taxes for the state of New York, including but not limited to local, county, school, city and village taxes. Including annual forms of list, accruals, payments, reconciliations as well as regulatory accounting overlay. Work with legal in filing tax protests where appropriate, filing abatements etc. Activity includes monitoring changes in tax law and working with ORTS - office of real tax services. Calculate/Prepare the economic obsolescence filing.
- Accrue, pay and file all special fuel and heavy vehicle taxes related to AWNY.
- Maintain & reconcile, accrue & pay, and file all gross receipts and sales & use taxes as they pertain to the state of NY. Handle all aspects of sales and use tax applicability including tax exempt certificates.
- Remain current on all applicable New York State indirect tax statutes.
Education and Experience
- 6+ years of tax experience
- Knowledge of the applicable federal, state and municipal tax laws/regulations with regards to property, sales & use taxes, gross receipts tax, fuel, heavy vehicle, excise and exempt organization taxes
- Expertise - advanced/well-developed skills and knowledge within a specific professional discipline involving the integration of theory and principles with organizational practices and precedents
- University - Bachelor degree or equivalent
