Class 2 Meter Reader Technician (entry level)

Purpose

This position is responsible for traveling to different sites and conducting gas consumption meter reads using meter reading equipment and responding to customer service requests, not limited to: connections, disconnects, rereading meters, checking for leaks, etc. Communicating with property owners or representatives and maintaining gas meters that measure the gas consumption of homes and businesses. Part of their job is to handle and investigate issues, respond to high bill complaints, inspect systems to identify any damages, troubleshoot problems, and perform repairs or replacements as necessary. Other duties as assigned.

Accountabilities

Field Service

  • Travel in the service territory to visit each home or business on the meter reader list each day.
  • Collect data from meters located inside or outside of homes and other buildings using meter reading equipment.
  • Recheck and verify readings when there have been complaints of readings that appear to be inaccurate.

Service & Repair

  • Provide new gas activation services to customers by connecting the meter and disconnecting service when required.
  • Locate and check meters for proper operation. Makes minor repairs in the field such as tightening connections.
  • Report inoperable and malfunctioning devices or unauthorized changes to the meter to supervisor.

Education and Experience

• Age 18 or over

• High School Diploma/GED

• Valid New York State driver license and clean driving record

• Physically fit for various weather conditions.

• Maintain residency within one of the following townships after your date of hire: Townships of Canton, DeKalb, Gouverneur, Hermon, Lisbon, Oswegatchie, Waddington or the City of Ogdensburg - All exceptions are contingent upon Management approval.

• Writing and oral communication skills are required. Must be able to communicate information clearly and accurately.

• Experience with electronic data storage processes preferred

• Reading, Math, Writing

• Ability to read, record and report data accurately.

• Must be able to perform duties and functions effectively with minimal supervision.

• Computer skills in MS Access, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc. preferred

HOURLY RATE: $22.86/hr
