Purpose
This position requires basic skills and knowledge within technical discipline, with the incumbent performing basic to medium complexity techniques. The incumbent will perform routine activities and work within clearly defined procedures/methods and guidelines, while assisting more experienced engineers in carrying out technical tasks, designs, calculations and methods. They will work under close direct supervision.
Accountabilities
This full-time position assists the Engineering Staff with various engineering tasks related to the design, operation, and/or maintenance of water and wastewater systems. The work will include applying engineering principals to real world problems and will provide the opportunity to learn new waterworks engineering skills. The tasks involved may include such things as CAD drafting, GIS mapping, data entry, water and wastewater system analysis, design report review, construction observation and other engineering projects as assigned
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists in various civil engineering tasks as related to the utilities.
- Performs research, prepares cost estimates and provides services in support of engineering department.
- Assist in developing spreadsheets and applications for field and office use.
- Prepares various documents as required using word processing and spreadsheet programs.
- Engage with Procurement to provide materials analysis, estimation and approval that meet specifications
- Update specific, detailed lists of project materials required for orders in SAP prior to Construction
- Few technical decisions are made, and these are routine with clearly defined procedures and guidelines
- Works under close supervision and work is reviewed by higher level engineers
- Executes works with new technology requiring Technical Knowledge of DDS, GIS and SAP EAM
- Files various documentation and develops or maintains the current file index.
- Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Reports all unsafe activities to the supervisor, Manager of Safety Services, and/or Human Resources.
- Performs various other duties as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor or designated staff.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology from accredited university.
- Must have experience with personal computers and have a strong working knowledge of the Windows operating systems (Windows 7 preferred) and various software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office, AutoCAD.
- Must have a basic understanding of engineering drafting. AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS experience is a plus.
- Have a basic understanding of hydraulics when it comes to gravity and pressure systems.
- Must be results-oriented with a high degree of initiative.
- Can interface, build relationships, and communicate with peers and all levels of management.
- Able to work independently and function in a team environment.
- Must have the ability to prioritize and organize multiple assignments with limited time constraints and changing requirements.
- Have good problem-solving and math skills.
- Must have adequate verbal and written skills to communicate in English with others including internal and external customers.
- Possess superior interpersonal skills and able to maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional manner.
- Valid state driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Able to follow Company rules, procedures, and directions from a supervisor.
- Valid Engineering Intern License preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Vision and hearing correctable to enable understanding of instructions and performance of job duties.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in English, both orally and in writing.
- Sufficient physical dexterity to walk, drive, lift, carry, stoop, bend, push, pull, and climb stairs.
- Ability to handle (lift, carry, operate, etc.) materials and equipment necessary for the job.*
