Purpose

The Accountant will perform accounting functions as necessary to collect, calculate, analyze, and present the Company’s fuel and energy costs for the regulated gas and electric utilities, with primary focus on the gas utilities. This requires the ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment under demanding time constraints; understand and discuss fundamental accounting concepts; and ensure a high level of compliance with financial policies, internal controls, and SEC, GAAP, FERC, and variance state regulatory requirements.

Accountabilities

  • Track fuel inventory levels and calculate cost of fuel consumed for the electric and gas utilities.
  • Actively participate in the monthly financial closing process by performing analysis, managing data, communicating with accounting and other staff, preparing journal entries, reviewing financial data, and performing account reconciliations.
  • Calculate and track fuel adjustment clause (FAC) over-under balances for multiple jurisdictions, for the electric utility.
  • Track purchase gas cost adjustment (PGA) over-under balances for multiple jurisdictions, for the gas utilities.
  • Coordinate and analyze internal (SOX) controls under the direction of management.  Work closely with internal and external auditors. 
  • Support regulatory filings, responses to regulatory data requests, and preparation of ad hoc analysis and reporting for regulatory compliance purposes. 
  • Assist with budget versus actual analysis.
  • Support other units of business including operations and regulatory functions.  Provide guidance to operations regarding proper account coding.

Education and Experience

  • BS Degree in Accounting or Finance (or equivalent) is required.
  • Advanced analytical skills and demonstrated knowledge of accounting theory and principles is required.
  • High level of personal computer skills is required, especially with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with accounting software required.
  • Work experience in a highly regulated industry preferred.
  • Ability to work under demanding time constraints with firm deadlines
