Senior Director, Market Strategy

Purpose

 

A key member of the Business Development team, the Senior Director, Market Strategy will be a leader driving the growth of Liberty’s North American unregulated wind, solar and storage portfolios. The Senior Director Market Strategy will lead the formation of Liberty’s long-term views of North American power markets, a key element in determining where Liberty will invest in new assets and its long-term contracting strategy. 

The Senior Director, Market Strategy will use their commercial acumen, knowledge of North American power markets, market modelling experience, and ability to identify and interpret the impacts of changes in fundamentals and political developments on market prices and dynamics to add value to investment decisions.

Accountabilities

 

  • Be the senior expert within the business development team advising on market related issues across North America and guiding the team’s approach to market assessments through the transition to a green economy
  • Regularly review third party market forecasts from multiple providers, understanding and evaluating the underlying assumptions, and identifying trends, risks, opportunities, and areas for further investigation
  • Assess impacts of forecasts on future potential for investments in renewable technologies including wind, solar, and storage
  • Use excellent communication skills to convey forecast results and dynamics to, and interpret results for, business development leadership and senior management
  • Work with other senior business development leaders to develop regional, technology specific, and project level, investment growth and diversification strategies  
  • Vet market revenue assumptions made in conjunction with individual project economic assessments including energy, capacity, renewable attributes, and ancillary services, incorporating long term market projections and historical feedback from trading teams actively involved in the regions 
  • Work with internal and external transmission and trading experts to develop project specific basis forecasts 
  • Use understanding of market drivers and dynamics to support Liberty’s origination team in assessing long-term asset contracting alternatives
  • Interact with a wide range of internal and external subject matter experts to vet fundamental forecast drivers against “real world” experience
  • Come to a view on future industry trends driving pricing through research, involvement in industry associations, and participation in industry events
  • Direct consultants and lead internal resources researching and modelling market related questions
  • Grow the sophistication level of the business development team’s understanding and appreciation of markets 
  • Contribute to the overall leadership of the development division in the areas such as strategy development, supporting corporate initiatives, people leadership and engagement

Education and Experience

 

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Statistics, or related fields
  • Minimum of 15 years of business experience
  • Minimum of 7 years supervisory experience
  • Significant experience performing or supervising performance of long-term fundamentals-based power market forecasting 
  • Experience with Aurora or similar market modelling software an asset 
  • Experience with programming (Python, R) and large data set analysis (Matlab, Tableau, Power BI) an asset
  • Commercial acumen and the ability to draw business opportunities out of forecasting insights  
  • Ability to make recommendations and decisions under conditions of uncertainty
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize conflicting deliverables
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
