Project Engineer - Electrical (Solar)

This position is responsible for Electrical Engineering within the multi-disciplined Engineering group. The position will provide expertise based on education and experience for Solar PV generation and Storage assets as part of the Engineering group to ensure the long term profitability and safety of the assets. This position will also manage engineering / maintenance capital projects for Liberty Power as needed.


Engineering support 

  • Provide Electrical engineering knowledge and expertise for operating and maintenance of Solar PV and BESS strorage portfolio of Liberty Power
  • Responsibility for engineering studies and all regulatory filings related to FERC and NERC compliance for the Liberty generation or Storage fleet in Canada and the United States.
  • Provide electrical engineering technical guidance and assistance to project managers within the Engineering team
  • Perform power system studies including load flow/Reactive compensation, fault levels, reviewing trips/faults, arc-flash, power quality (Harmonics, Flicker), Transient Stability Studies (Load Rejection, Voltage & Frequency Control, etc.)                                                        

Techncial/Operational Support    

  • Troubleshooting electrical hardware and system control issues related to various substation elements (Transformers, Lines, Load break switches, Instrument transformers, Circuit Breakers, Switchgears, Fuses and VAR compensation devices)
  • Resolving technical issues associated with the installation and operation of different Photovoltaic sub systems (Inverters, Solar panels, Trackers, Combiner boxes, DC cabling, PV strings, ground faults, weather station sensors and control systems, etc.)
  • Lead trouble-shooting exercises and supporting Field Ops during unplanned outages
  • Obtaining all the necessary data for problem solving, including reports on condition of equipment, and carrying out site investigation, reviewing design features of equipment, evaluation of maintenance repair and rehabilitation methods, availability of equipment and materials
  • Analyze operating data on an as needed basis (at the request of stakeholders or based on production variances) to determine trends and identify concerns including conducting or coordinating consequential root cause reviews.
  • Review test results, commissioning results, as-built drawings, etc.
  • Initiating, generating and maintaining files and documentation related to the EMS, protective relays, communication/SCADA RTUs, networking and energy metering instrumentation including drawings, specifications, software configuration & reports

Project Planning & Execution    

  • Provide project planning services for technology based projects including preparing;
  1. Scope of work definition
  2. Budget estimating,
  3. Project scheduling for the purpose of project justification and obtaining project approval, including revisions as required.
  • Execute small to intermediate projects related to equipment repair, replacement or retrofits                                 


  • Manage external contrators, service providers and consultants including the preparation of scope of work and request for proposal documents, evaluating proposals, executing commercial paperwork, and managing the work.
  • React to changes in work assignments and priority and undertake all other tasks as assigned.
  • Perform all work treating worker and public safety as paramount and in compliance with all environmental and other regulatory requirements.

Education and Experience

  • Must be a Professional Engineer - Electrical Engineer
  • Experienced in power renewables generation and storage operations with preference in Solar PV & BESS Storage
  • Technical understanding of PV solar generation and energy storage; Familiarity with computerized DAS/SCADA/Monitoring systems, EAM – Energy Management System, BMS – Battery Management system and interconnection agreements
  • Must have working knowledge of PV/Storage Inverters, Power System equipment including medium to high voltage and Protection & Control: protective relaying, device coordination, metering and electrical testing
  • Experience in power system studies including load flow/Reactive compensation, fault levels, reviewing trips/faults, arc-flash, power quality (Harmonics, Flicker), Transient Stability Studies (Load Rejection, Voltage & Frequency Control, etc.)
  • Must have a high aptitude for technical learning and information assimilation noting there is not an expectation that the individual will be an expert in all areas of power generation utilized by Algonquin but that they will be able to develop the expertise as, and when required including acknowledging when outside expertise resources should be engaged, and identifying and procuring those resources as need.
  • Must have strong communication skills for the purpose of sharing and transferring critical developed expertise to others as needed, as well as communicating and defending technology based opinions, recommendations, and decisions.
  • Strong analytical and technical as well as problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of renewable energy operations, best practices and industry safety standards
  • Must be disciplined, as often the role is self-guided and self-managing with challenging performance expectations and measures.
  • Must have a basic understanding of worker and public safety issues and environmental regulations.
  • Must have the ability to succeed in Algonquin provided safety training including practical and table top training.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and the ability to rent vehicles on the corporate account.
  • Must be able and flexible to travel within Canada and the United States as needed.
