Director, Greenfield Development

A key member of the Business Development team, the Director, Greenfield Development will be a leader driving the growth of Liberty’s North American unregulated wind and solar portfolios.  The Director Greenfield Development will lead the team’s activities siting and pursuing early-stage utility scale development opportunities. They will have will have responsibility for the technical teams that provide wind and solar resource analysis and GIS mapping support to all aspects of Liberty’s early and late stage development process, as well as a team of early-stage project developers.
The Director, Greenfield Development will add value to transactions by using their broad knowledge of both of the technical aspects of project siting as well markets, to help identify regions where projects can be developed that meet the company’s financial objectives.They will use their experience, drive, and creativity to assist the team in overcoming development challenges.  



Working with internal and external stakeholders, the Director, Greenfield Development will:

  • Identify viable sites for new wind and solar project development using knowledge of wind and solar resource assessment, siting constraints, constructability, permitting, transmission, and energy markets
  • Work with the team to drive efficient processes to identify new potential sites leveraging the use of technology  
  • Successfully deliver a pipeline of greenfield projects that are technically feasible, have stakeholder support and land control, are submitted into that relevant interconnection processes, and are anticipated to meet corporate financial metrics and growth targets over a 5 year time horizon
  • Use proven leadership skills to effectively lead the technical teams that support all aspects of project development, working with development leadership to assess business priorities, and allocate resources between the competing needs of the early and late stage wind and solar projects in Algonquin’s portfolio
  • Ensure that the technical teams continue to have up to date industry knowledge. the skills and tools necessary to be able to perform best in class internal resource assessments and site evaluations, as well as effectively review 3rd party reports
  • Building on your base of knowledge of North American power markets, collaborate effectively with other internal experts such as the customer origination, energy services, and market teams to target regions in which to grow and diversify Liberty’s portfolio in alignment with market opportunities and customer preferences 
  • Coordinate with other technical, supplier facing, and operational teams to stays abreast of industry technology trends and cost saving opportunities to further advance the company’s competitive position in pursuing growth opportunities
  • Help project teams identify, assess, solve challenges and drive project optimization related to: resource analysis, project layout, technology selection, siting constraints, resource measurement campaigns, land acquisition, stakeholder consultation, and other aspects of early stage project development
  • Be the owner of recommendations to the Executive team for spend on greenfield project opportunities and manage the overall budget for this category of asset
  • Ensure that appropriate project record keeping and reporting is maintained, following and helping to evolve the company’s existing project management practices, including identification and assessment of risks and ensuring the successful handoff of projects to later stage project managers
  • Develop team members, advancing their careers and making them increasingly competent and capable of originating and evaluating business opportunities 
  • Contribute to the overall leadership of the development division in the areas such as strategy development, supporting corporate initiatives, people leadership and engagement

Education and Experience


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related fields
  • MBA or PMP designation an asset
  • Minimum of 10 years of business experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in technical or management aspects of renewable energy project development
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in people management (direct report or cross-functional teams)
  • Experience with resource modelling software (WindPro, OpenWind, PVSyst) an asset
  • Experience with mapping software (ArcGIS) an asset
  • Experience with programming (Python) an asset
  • Excellent external and internal relationship building skills with an focus on driving business results
  • Commercial acumen and the ability to effectively evaluate and solve business challenges 
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize conflicting deliverables
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
