Billing Clerk

The primary purpose of this position is to respond to customer inquiries and requests; setup, update and maintain customer account coding; create financial transactions; and obtain and review meter readings in order to produce timely and accurate monthly customer bills.


•    Perform customer service duties by answering customer calls, through direct customer contact, or in response to written correspondence; Complete necessary account updates, notes, and/or work orders for service applications, file maintenance, payment arrangements, etc.
•    Record number of meters read/not read; Review and take action based on reason for unread meters (contact customer, create work order)
•    Process consumption in billing system from imported reads; Review boundary, exception, and variance reports; Resolve and correct errors (including updates to base load and degree day factors); Post work orders; Process utility billing cycles
•    Review first and final bills for accuracy, deposits, surcharges, refunds, bill inserts, etc. 
•    Correct/adjust utility bills as neccessary
•    Identify, investigate, resolve, calculate, and bill customers for non-registering meters
•    Enter and post miscellaneous adjustments
•    Update and adhere to billing and read schedules
•    Setup, review and adjust customer budgets
•    Surcharge maintenance including setup, billing, balancing, and filing
•    Calculate monthly bank utility accounts from usage and deliveries; Email reports to customers
•    Complete monthly stats by compiling information from billing system and large volume summary report
•    Complete consumption request reports, as necessary
•    Identify process improvements in order to improve billing efficiency, accuracy, simplicity and customer experience
•    Other duties as assigned
•    Maintain retail access program; Bill accounts on behalf of marketers; (Responsibility is anticipated – no marketers at this time)  

Education and Experience

  • Ability to work independently and/or as an effective team member in order to meet deadlines

  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Accounting knowledge
  • Database knowledge
  • Three years of related experience preferred but not required
