Purpose

This position leads and manages the tax function for the Liberty Utilities West Region (one of 4 U.S. regions) involving tax accounting, reporting, planning, forecasting, rate case support, business acquisitions and tax audits by various tax authorities and regulatory bodies. The position is responsible for all tax functions in the West region including taking the lead on tax matters in purchase accounting, managing Powerplan/Powertax system implementation, overseeing tax processes related to US corporate income tax provision, compliance, and other corporate tax matters to ensure Liberty entities meet and comply with various internal and external tax reporting and regulatory requirements.  This position will also have accountability for the Liberty’s Chilean investments, including a Chilean regulated water utility.

 

This position provides an opportunity to work at a fast-growing company and join a dynamic team driven to attract top talent. It is desirable to be close to Liberty’s West Region offices in Arizona, Texas, or California, but working remotely from Liberty’s other regions including the corporate headquarters located in the Greater Toronto Area is also feasible.

Accountabilities

  • Prepare/review interim and annual income tax provisions to support public reporting and stand-alone financial statement requirements
  • Manage PowerPlan/PowerTax system implementation for West Region entities
  • Work with Regulatory and Accounting groups and provide tax expertise in preparation, support and defense of rate case filings, and in other tax areas including but not limited to transfer tax, property and sales tax filings
  • Manage outsourced income tax compliance process and review US federal and state tax returns prepared by outsourcing provider (Big 4)
  • Oversee indirect tax compliance (combination in-source and out-source model) and accrual process including property tax; sales and use tax; gross receipts tax; special fuels tax; and all other taxes other than income taxes
  • Review cash tax and effective tax rate forecasts to support Liberty's budgeting and long-term modeling requirements
  • Communicate with the Internal Revenue Service, various state tax authorities, regulatory commissions, or agencies to respond to audit requests
  • Work with external auditors to ensure smooth audit processes
  • Support Liberty tax functions with tax due diligence, tax modelling and tax structuring advice
  • Assist with tax planning and reorganization projects, including research and coordination with advisors and internal stakeholders
  • Actively participate in the identification and execution of process improvement/best practice initiatives
  • Take the lead on tax matters associated with purchase accounting
  • Supervise one direct senior tax analyst report
  • Coach, mentor and motivate Liberty regional tax team members and provide ongoing trainings and support in their career developments

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in U.S. corporate income tax along with a professional accounting designation (CPA preferred)
  • Degree in tax, accounting, finance, or business
  • Prior regulated utility income tax experience is preferred
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish is a plus
  • Excellent tax accounting skills in reporting under US GAAP
  • Self-directed and ability to work independently in a subsidiary location and report to headquarters in a timely, comprehensive manner
  • Excellent communication skills (both written & oral) and interpersonal skills to effectively deal with other team members and different departments
  • Attention to details and strong hands-on skills
  • Able to work with and meet tight deadlines
  • Proficient in the use of MS office products; SAP or similar; Power Plan and Power Tax experience preferred; Hyperion smart-view preferred
