Engineer I-IV, Protection

Junior level engineer: Work in tandem with guidance from the department Manager and more expert engineers acting as mentors. Incumbent will analyze and protect the transmission and system and interconnections. Perform short circuit studies, coordinate all transmission and relaying systems, fulfill and lead NERC compliance requirements and assist in coordinating. Assist in scope development of capital projects in both cost and technical details. Investigate, analyze and propose mitigation techniques for power quality problems occurring on the system and at customer's facilities. 

 Senior level engineer:  With minimal mentorship from the dept. Manager, lead work tasked within the department and coordinate work of entry level engineers within the department to support and accomplish department goals. Using past experience, provide authoritative knowledge and judgement to lead and direct the design of protection schemes for other junior level protection engineers. Cross lead in other areas of engineering where required or needed. Lead in training entry and guiding intermediate level engineers.


  • Develop conceptual designs, direction, consultation and support for protection and substation projects.
  • Design and analyze protective systems and develop necessary settings and logic as required to protect the transmission and systems consistent with company standards and applicable codes. Help develop company standards regarding protection systems.
  • Provides guidance to intermediate level electrical engineers and train entry level electrical engineers.    
  • Calculate protective relay settings for transmission and systems, relay and fuse coordination, calculation of fault currents, analysis of relay operations.
  • Resolve problems regarding protection design (protective relaying schemes, relay panels, and logic) and materials with internal and outside entities to ensure successful completion of projects within a given time frame.
  • Participate and lead in teamwork by attending and conducting team meetings and contributing ideas.  Utilize excellent written and communication skills to promote change.
  • As required, work with and coordinate consulting engineers to ensure integrity of design, material procurement and completion of an integrated project on schedule.
  • Enhance the company by implementing time and cost saving methods of completing tasks within the department.

Education and Experience

Junior level engineer: #LI-MC1

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate or ability to obtain EIT certificate within 12 months preferred.
Priority given to candidates with working knowledge of CYMEDIST (desirable) and/or ASPEN (highly desirable).
Solid written and verbal communication skills. Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
Willing to travel once trained, up to (15% with some overnights).
Senior level engineer:

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of utility protection experience.
Professional Engineering (PE) license required.
Priority given to candidates with working knowledge of CYMEDIST (desirable) and/or APSEN (highly desirable).
Strong written and verbal communication skills for compiling technical reports.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Willing to travel (15% with some overnights).
